Congratulations to you all

Well done to you all for working so hard to achieve such terrific results in the recent maths tests.  Even if your name was not on the list for the next level, I am quite happy for you to sit the tests if you would like to.  I am looking forward to marking the writing and reading comprehension papers; it is a joy to see how much progress you have made.

From a very proud teacher.

Homework

Hello Students,

The rest is up to you...

As we discussed in class, please revise those areas of the curriculum that you feel less confident about during this long weekend.  There are plenty of useful links on this blog, so make use of them!

We have another hectic week ahead of us; time is very precious.

Not long to go now.

Best wishes,

Mrs T.

Home School Book Week Ending 17th May

Home School Book – Year 6

Dear Parents,

The SATs examinations have taken place in the UK this week.  International schools can expect to receive the papers towards the end of next week.  Providing these arrive on time, it is my intention to begin testing on Monday 27th May for two weeks. Pupils will be sitting Maths and English examinations spanning attainment levels 3-8; may I again draw your attention to the fact that at the end of primary school, the expected pupil attainment level  is 4 and level 7/8 is equivalent to Year 9 at secondary school. The children themselves, have chosen to aim for higher levels; whatever the results, they should be congratulated for their determination and motivation during this academic year.  I am very proud of all of them. Would you please avoid taking your child out of school during the test weeks, thank you.

Obviously the focus is now on practising examinations style questions. In literacy this week we have been concentrating on how a setting of a story helps create a particular atmosphere or mood, as well as answering practise questions about storyline, theme, descriptive detail and imagery. Being able to give a personal response to the text and supporting the points made by detailed and relevant reference to the text is a key skill expected at higher levels.

In maths, some children have been answering level 5- 8 questions on Algebra and Shape and Space, others have been working through mock examination papers.  All children are being tested at KS3 for mental maths and doing well.

Rehearsals are taking place in the afternoon.  To help with understanding the plot, we have been watching a modern day interpretation of Romeo and Juliet, ‘West Side Story’. In our performance, there is an intriguing selection of ‘Romeos’ and ‘Juliets’; all romantic Romeos will require black costumes and Juliets will require pretty pink outfits.

Fed up with the rain affecting our PE, the students endured a ‘killer’ workout in the BISB Dance and Fitness Studio!  Work is progressing; the ceiling has been painted, the kitchen sink removed and the walls prepared for painting by Year 6.

The ‘Rippledown’ usb stick is on its way round…

I hope that the sun shines this weekend.

Best wishes,

Mrs T.

Home School Book Week Ending 4th May 2013

Home School Book – Year 6

Dear Parents,

Long Live Rippledown; what a fantastic week we spent at Rippledown this year.  Our cunning plan of daily long walks worked a treat; I managed at least six hours sleep every night. I am sure that the children have told you all about their escapades; hopefully, you have seen the blogs and no doubt heard me singing the success of the week from the BISB roof top.  I shall organise a ‘Rippledown photos and videos’ usb stick for you to copy from – is there a parent who would be willing to organise the distribution of this?

Last weeks’ ’forced marches’ are now being followed by ‘forced revision’!  On Tuesday, the pupils wrote a persuasive text and are now in the throes of mastering explanation texts.  Their task is to explain the catalogue of errors that resulted in the sinking of The Titanic.  We have been studying in detail the enquiry that was held after the disaster.  We constructed our own scientific demonstration, with the aid of Lego people, ice-trays and water, of the water displacing the air in the water tight compartments; The Titanic was designed to stay afloat if four of these compartments filled, however, in the collision with the iceberg, five compartments were damaged.

The ‘boot camp’ continued with a daily mental maths workout of previous years’ examination KS3 papers; the irritating, monotonous voice of the examination presenter is slowly driving us all to distraction! Despite this, the results are promising, so we shall keep practising.

Another busy and exciting week ahead of us with a visit from the author and illustrator Shoo Rayner; we are hoping that he will be willing to run an art workshop with our budding artists.

I look forward to meeting you all at our International Day tomorrow; I plan to purchase enough culinary goodies to fill my freezer, so that I do not have to cook during the run-up to the end of year examinations!

Full steam ahead!
Kind Regards,

Mrs T
